Krista will discuss how legal tools such as laws, policies and agreements can be used by First Nations to assert sovereignty over First Nations information.  She'll also propose strategies to protect First Nation communities and their information while still allowing partnerships with governments and universities.

Krista Yao   JD, BA (Econ) is a lawyer with Nadjiwan Law Office, located on the Nipissing First Nation in Ontario. She has practiced Indigenous Law for 23 years. Through her work with national and regional First Nation organizations, she has developed unique expertise in the area of First Nations' information governance and privacy.  A significant part of her legal practice includes assisting First Nation clients integrate OCAP® principles into First Nations information sharing and research initiatives. This work typically involves collaboration with federal and provincial governments, as well as universities and non-government organizations.
